About Us

Background

The “Manual for Review of Undergraduate Study Programmes of Sri Lankan Universities and Higher Education Institutions” issued by the University Grants Commission emphasises the need for each Faculty in the Sri Lankan University system  to establish an Alumni Association. Therefore, the Quality Assurance Cell of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science (FVMAS), under the direction of the Dean, was exploring possibilities of fulfilling this requirement. Accordingly, a Working Group for Forming an Alumni Association (WGFAA) for the FVMAS was established in November 2018.

The WGFAA held several meetings, consulted widely with alumni in Sri Lanka and abroad, examined the Constitutions of the Alumni Association of University of Peradeniya and several other Faculty Alumni Associations, and prepared a Draft Constitution. The Inaugural Meeting of the Veterinary Alumni Association of Peradeniya (VAAP) was organized by the WGFAA on 19th July 2019. The meeting was attended by 46 alumni, who approved the Constitution and elected the First Executive Committee (Ex-Co) of VAAP.

Subsequently, the First Ex-Co obtained the services of a legal consultant specializing in matters relating to the Registration of Companies. Based on his recommendations and in accordance with the requirements of the Companies Act No.07 of 2007 for registration of an Association as a Company Limited by Guarantee, the ‘Constitution’ was re-formulated as ‘Articles of Association’. This document was presented and approved at the First Annual General Meeting of VAAP held on 20th March 2021, and the Second Ex-Co was elected.
